Healthy Happy Smiles

 In Dental Care

April is Oral Health Month and a great time to think more about taking better care of your teeth and gums.

The health of your teeth can affect your smile and self-image. “We believe that good health comes with a healthy lifestyle, which includes staying active, eating healthy and taking care of oral heath” says Dr. Dadiala. Poor oral hygiene can cause bad breath and stained teeth, but it may also lead to gingivitis, an inflammation of the gum disease, and even loss of teeth.

Here are ways to keep teeth and gums healthy:

  1. Reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. Sugar is one of the main causes of dental problem. “I advise people to enjoy the natural sweetness of fruits and to cut out as much refine sugars as possible. Pop and Gatorade are huge culprits in reducing a healthy smile” says Dr. Dadiala.
  2. Take time to brush, floss, and rinse every single day. A good oral care routine includes brushing for two minutes twice a day, flossing, and rinsing mouth with water after every snack.
  3. Use a proven brand of toothpaste as it will help prevent and even reverse gingivitis and early stages of gum disease. It will also fight cavities, tartar and plaque, and helps freshen breath. Some even help whitening teeth.
  4. Visit the Dentist twice a year for routine check-ups. Besides having teeth cleaned, regular check-ups can help uncover issues earlier when they are easier to treat avoiding long-term dental care and expenses.
  5. Keep in mind that certain health conditions require special oral care. If you are pregnant, or have diabetes, your risk of gum disease increases. Ensure you visit your dentist at least once a year.
  6. Avoid all tobacco products and get Oral Cancer screening once a year.
  7. Be a good role model to children. Just as being active together as a family is important, so is finding ways to teach children to make healthy eating habits and regular brushing and flossing habits.
